A Couple Hundred Reasons Not To Trust GameTrailers

As is the trend with most major video game franchises in this console generation, Final Fantasy has taken an almost comical leap backwards from the previous, far superior title in the series. At this point, Final Fantasy XIII is pretty widely regarded by reputable game journalists as a baffling, ill-advised exercise in tedium and poor design choices.

Of course, the previous entry, Final Fantasy XII, had its fair share of detractors as well, although they fall pretty squarely into the category of mouth-breathing forum trolls rather than some of the foremost writers in the video game scene.

GameTrailers, unfortunately, was one of the more well-known outlets that wasn’t terribly thrilled about Final Fantasy XII. While I try not to take their reviews all that seriously, I do like their style and slick presentation a lot, and I watch most of what they put out. Having grown fond of them, then, I was a little bit blown away by their ‘meh’ take on XII, which I think is the best Final Fantasy since…well, ever.

The review is especially questionable in light of the rest of their scoring. SO, without further ado, here’s a complete list of all games reviewed by GameTrailers that scored the same or higher than Final Fantasy XII. Y’know, for comparison.

  1. chargedblast says:

It’s very true that Star Wars: Episode 3 is a better game than FFXII. We all just have to live with that.

  2. Holy SHIT how did I miss bolding that one. That game got like a 5 in Game Informer. GAME INFORMER.

  3. Kyle says:

Anybody remember Humongous Entertainment and Broadband software with all the edutainment and junior adventure/arcade games?

I love Putt Putt and it’s too bad I never got into Freddie Fish much.

Those games always change each gameplay and you don’t always solve the same puzzle twice.

  4. Kyle says:

Why can’t modern video games be like that where it’s designed to be fun and why can’t we use friggen flash drives to make these games?

My dad has this idea that they should start making video games using flash drives:

A flash drive is a small device but can hold TONS of informatin on it and you can store both playable and read only memory.

For example I got my books on a flash drive as read only memory until I install it in a computer:

The games and associate files of course will be *read only memory* until you transfer it onto you PC/laptop/Mac.whatever and the potential is as limited as your imagination as these things can be HUGE nowadays.

The days of CD drives will be pretty much over but we just need SOMEONE to step up to bat and make that new idea a reality and gaming will be changed in ways we can’t even comprehend now.

  5. capitanhook says:

why modern video games are suck nice article well u must be aroun my age around 30s.. coz in those times in small kb they created miracles and they always create games for gaming plaseure now they just care about nice graphics and demos..

  6. JW says:

They gave Okami a “meh” score? Really?

    Are they blind?

  7. stoneydaze says:

I think that technology has replaced imagination. Modern video games try to imitate reality instead of creating a new setting and game play. We’re at a point where there is but one or two formats for making games. This happened because video games got as popular as they have, and therefore companies have a higher requirement for making money. So, you have very little margin for error or your business will get shut down. The rules are now: 1.)Find a trend 2.)Reassemble game play mechanics 3.)Sell 4 million copies.
